What to Look for When Hiring a Moving Company
Moving is a big deal. It is a time of major change for you and your family. There are many emotions as you end one phase of your life and transition to a new one. Not only that, but you are going to be handling and transporting every possession you own. It’s a lot to think about and deal with.
So when it comes to choosing a moving company to help you with your move, it’s important to hire the right team. That in itself can be a very daunting decision, so to help we’ve come up with a list of what to look for when hiring a moving company.
When hiring anyone for any job, it’s always a good idea to talk to people that you know and trust. Has anyone you know moved recently? If so, ask what company they hired and how it went. Talk to your friends, coworkers, neighbors and even real estate agents in your area. Chances are even if they haven’t moved recently, they know someone who has and can get you in touch. Be sure to ask how the move went in general, but wait to get a personalized quote directly from the company as your home and move may be very different from those you talk to.
Get an Estimate
Once you’ve found a few companies to look into and have done some perusing on their website, call for an in-home estimate. A good moving company will ask questions to make sure they are giving you the most accurate quote. They will ask what you plan to take and look through your cupboards, garage, basement, attic and any other areas where you have belongings that need to be moved. During the estimate, you can get a better feel for the company by talking to someone in person.
During your estimate ask questions about the services provided with their initial estimate. For example, one company may quote you less, but they won’t be packing your belongings like another company would for a slightly higher cost.
You should also get the company’s full name and any DBA (doing business as) names, ask how long they’ve been in business, get their contact information, and you can even ask them for more references.
If you are in the Utah area, be sure to add Kellogg Movers to your list of moving company contenders. With specialized residential and commercial moving and packing, they’ll help make your move as smooth a transition as possible.
Once all of the estimates have been completed, you should sit down with your spouse or family to discuss the pros and cons of each company. Once you’ve narrowed it down, it’s time to do a little more checking. There are several websites you can use to check out a company, but one resource you should take advantage of is the FMCSA’s Safety Violation and Consumer Complaints hotline (888-368-7238) where you can call to find out if there have been any complaints associated with your top pics.
Make your Decision
If everything checks out and you feel good about your decision, it’s safe to say it’s time to make your decision and move forward with your move confidently!
